Randal Box retired in December 2021 as Director of Bands at West Memphis High School and Supervisor of Bands for the West Memphis School District, following a 27-year tenure as Director of Bands at Brentwood High School in Tennessee. Prior to Brentwood he taught in Pocahontas, Arkansas, and Clarksville, Tennessee. He holds degrees from Middle Tennessee State University and Arkansas State University.
His ensembles appeared at major national events, including the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City in 1995 and 2001; in 2002 the Brentwood Wind Ensemble performed at the National Conference of MENC—The National Association for Music Education—in Nashville.
Under his direction, the Brentwood Marching Band was a ten-time finalist at the MTSU Contest of Champions, earned Reserve Grand Champion honors in 2002 and Honorable Mention in 2003, and were consistently successful in regional and national competitions.
In 2000, he established a conductor-in-residence program at Brentwood High School that brought nationally recognized guest conductors, including past presidents of the National Band Association and the American Bandmasters Association,. He also sustained a long-running tradition of inviting guest soloists and ensembles for collaborative concerts.
Mr. Box is past president of both the Middle Tennessee School Band and Orchestra Association and the Tennessee Bandmasters Association, and he has served the Tennessee Music Education Association (TMEA) as State Jazz Chair, Conference Program Chair, and Conference Performance Auditions Chair.
Mr. Box was featured in the cover article of the July 2008 Instrumentalist magazine. The John Philip Sousa Foundation named Mr. Box a “Legion of Honor Laureate” during the 2011 Midwest Clinic, and he was inducted into the Middle Tennessee State University “Band of Blue” Hall of Fame in 2013 and the Tennessee Bandmasters Hall of Fame in 2022. He is an elected member of Phi Beta Mu, the international bandmasters fraternity.
From 2003 through 2026, Mr. Box and his wife, Tawana served as directors of the Tennessee Ambassadors of Music. Mr. Box conducted the Ambassadors Band in twelve European concert tours featuring outstanding high school instrumental and vocal musicians from across Tennessee, performing for enthusiastic international audiences in London, Paris, the medieval town of Rothenburg, Germany, and Alpine villages in Switzerland and Austria.
