What is the Tennessee Valley Winds

The Tennessee Valley Winds is a non-profit, all volunteer, self-supporting community band that has been providing quality musical performances since 1984. The community band experience is unlike school or professional groups. Rarely do amateurs and professionals, young and old, get to work together. The opportunity to learn and grow is unique. The director is more of a guide than an authority figure, and does not assign parts or solos. It is expected that all will help each other by offering suggestions and sharing. Friendships are born of shared work and musical enjoyment.

The purpose and objectives of the TVW are:

  • To make a positive contribution to the musical environment and culture of the Middle Tennessee area.
  • To promote music education through programs, activities, and community outreach events.
  • To provide an opportunity for quality musical experiences and musical growth by the membership.
  • To provide an opportunity for contact and interaction with musicians of advanced proficiency by the membership.
  • To advance the position of the community concert band in America through public performances of quality band literature.

The TVW has been able to offer opportunities for musicians to perform with other ensembles. They have shared concerts with the MTSU Faculty and Student Ensembles, the Nashville Symphony Orchestra, Columbia Community Band, Motlow College Jazz Ensemble, and several Middle Tennessee school bands and choirs.

This type of group gives performers a chance to play in smaller groups as well. The TVW Brass Quintet has performed in places that cannot host the full ensemble. The TVW Brass Quintet has been able to give back to the community by performing for the residents at NHC Adam's Place and the Alvin C. York Campus of the VA Tennessee Valley Healthcare System. They have also performed at the Murfreesboro Municipal Airport.

Community Support

The ensemble incurs many costs throughout a concert season, including the costs of maintaining its music library, setting-up various concert sites, printing programs and posters--these to cite just a few. These costs are paid by monies gathered by donations from the local community, by concert sponsors, and occasionally by band members. If you would like to support the band with a direct donation, please contact us or use the PayPal link in the menu to the left. And, please, know that we greatly appreciate your donation!

TVW History

Tennessee Valley Winds - Joseph T. Smith

The TVW, originally the Murfreesboro Community Concert Band, was organized in 1984 for area musicians who had played in high school and college bands but who were now without a performance outlet. Joseph T. Smith, founding director and conductor from 1984-2000, lead the group through many notable performances including the Midwest Clinic International Band Conference, The Tennessee Music Educators Association Convention, the Schermerhorn Symphony Hall and was even a featured performance group in London, England.

Tennessee Valley Winds - Terry Jolley, Conductor

From 2000 - 2010, the TVW was directed by Terry Jolley and continued to grow and enjoy the respect, great reputation and quality of music that was originally established by it's founder.

Tennessee Valley Winds - Erich Zimmerman, Conductor

Beginning in 2011, the TVW, directed by Erich Zimmerman, enjoys a most enviable reputation. The group performs several concerts in Murfreesboro each year and travels to other communities in Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky.
